The Elmira Pioneers suited up for their first playoff game since winning the league championship in 2007. The Pioneers who entered the game as the 1 seed squared off against the 4th seed Alfred Thunder. Andrew Wall got the call for game 1 of the best of 3 series.
Andrew Wall finished the 2010 season with a 5-1 record and a winner of his last 3 starts. Wall threw against Alfred for the second time this year as he allowed 2 runs on 10 hits against the Thunder at Dunn Field.
The Thunder cracked a 0-0 score in the top of the third inning as Taylor Kaprive drove a ball to the outfield to drive in two runs. The score would hold for awhile as the Pioneers offense was unable to mount anything against starter David Wynn early on.
The PIoneers picked the sixth inning to rally back as they would plate six runs in the inning. Four runs would be scored via bases loaded walks and two runs from Brian Erie after a line drive up the middle. The Thunder would use four relief pitchers to get through the sixth and seventh innings as Elmira tacked on two more runs in the home half of the seventh to take an 8-2 lead.
Andrew Wall finished the night allowing 2 runs over 7 innings of work while walking 1 batter and striking out 3. Jordan Egan made his first post-season appearance in the eighth inning as he would finish things out for Elmira striking 4 batters and getting a pop fly to end the ballgame.
Six Pioneers in all finished the night with one hit apiece and seven players drove in at least one run. The Pioneers move to 1-0 in the 2010 playoffs and will look to close out the series on Saturday, July 31st as the series will move to Alfred St. for a 4:00 P.M. start time. If the Pioneers pick up the victory they will be off on Sunday to see who they would host in the second round on Monday, August 2nd at 7:00 P.M.
