With a Division Championship already locked-up, the Pioneers are looking to finish the season with the best record in the NYCBL. Elmira, who entered Wednesday night's contest with a 27-14 record welcomed in the Hornell Dodgers for the second night in a row.
Nate Kowal went to the hill for Elmira as he looked for his 4th win of the season. Ryan Ferguson gave the Pioneers an early lead as he laced a double to right field scoring John Snyder. Kowal would get the Dodgers to ground into an inning ending double play in the second.
Elmira jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the third inning as Mike Cleary plated two runs on a single that would be followed up by an RBI double from Brandon Martineson. Kowal would run into a jam in the fourth inning as the Dodgers keyed in on a couple of errors committed by the Pioneers.
With a 4-4 score in the sixth inning, Hornell took advantage of a 3-1 fastball as Tony Micklon took Kowal deep to left field for a 2-run home run. Elmira closed the Hornell lead to 6-5 in the bottom of the inning after Mike Cleary was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
A comeback would not be in the script for Elmira as the Dodgers were able to hold on to their 7-5 lead. Nate Kowal suffered his second loss of the year as he falls to 3-2 after pitching 6.1 innings and allowing sevens runs on five hits.
With the loss, Elmira moves to 27-15 on the season and finishes the regular season with a 16-5 record at Dunn Field. The 2010 NYCBL playoffs start on Friday, July 30th at 7:05 PM. The Pioneers first round opponent has yet to be determined as there will be a host of games on Thursday around the West Division.
