With a playoff spot locked up, the Pioneers headed to Geneva on Sunday for a match-up with the Red Wings. Elmira came into the game having won 5 straight games against Geneva after falling 5-1 in their first meeting of the year.
Elmira sent Chad Simendinger to the mound with his 3-2 record. Simendinger had Geneva's number with 2 of victories on the season against them. Simendinger ran into trouble in the first couple of innings and Geneva would get on the board in the bottom of the second inning.
Trailing 2-0 the Pioneers started their rally in the third inning when Justin Lamborn drove home Jake Rickenbach on a single up the middle. Brandon Martineson tied things up at 2-2 in the sixth inning after entering the game for Carlos Lopez. Martineson singled to center field scoring John Snyder who walked to lead off the inning.
Simendinger after holding Geneva off the scoreboard for 4 innings gave the lead back to the Red Wings as they cashed in on 3 hits to take a 4-2 lead. Riley McDermott pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth for Elmira but no comeback victory would be in the bag of tricks for the Pioneers
With the loss Elmira moves to 25-13 on the year and will have a double header on Monday against the Allegany County Nitros. Tuesday, July 27th is Fan Appreciation Night. The Party in the Park Concert Series concludes with a performance by the Colin Markus Band. Wednesday July 28 is the season finale against the Hornell Dodgers.
