The Pioneers came into Saturday night looking to keep their winning streak alive as they welcomed in the Geneva Red Wings to Dunn Field. Elmira won their last meeting between the teams in Geneva 6-4. Aaron Zaleznik got the start for Elmira making it his sixth of the season.
Zaleznik brought a 2-3 record into the game with one thing on his mind, getting his record back to par and the Pioneers in the win column. Zaleznik took a tough loss in his last start against the Webster Yankees.
Elmira took advantage early in the game as Brandon Martineson doubled off the wall in centerfield and later scored on a balk by Eric Schwieger giving Elmira the 1-0 lead. The Pioneers added to their lead in the fourth inning with Martineson and Keller reaching base after singles. Matt Ford scored both runners with a double out to centerfield that eluded the Geneva fielder.
The Pioneers would take a 5-1 lead in the fifth inning and put 11 hits up on the board as they chased Schwieger from the mound who allowed five runs in six innings. Geneva made a bid to tighten things up in the fifth inning off Zaleznik scoring two runs to make it a close one for Elmira. Elmira added two more runs to the board in the bottom of the seventh inning to take 7-2 lead.
Zaleznik finished the night allowing two runs on three hits and striking out four batters through seven innings. Cody Normand pitched the final two innings in relief holding Geneva off the scoreboard striking out two batters and walking one. Zaleznik picked up his third win of season.
The win moves Elmira to 20-10 on the season and they will continue their home stand on Monday, July 19th as the Hornell Dodgers come to town. On Spectacular Saturday, July 24th the Pioneers will take on the Alfred Thunder when “lucky fan” giveaways include an HDTV, DVD player and the “Allegiant Air weekend vacation” in Orlando.
