The Pioneers hit the field Sunday after enjoying two days off with a matchup against the Geneva Red Wings. Elmira came into the game having won its two previous contests against the Red Wings, with the most recent victory coming in Geneva.
Chad Simendinger in his fourth start of the season and first against the Red Wings looked to help Elmira to their twelfth win of the season. Simendinger struck out the first batter of the game and would breeze through the inning getting a fly out and ground out ending the top of the first.
Elmira would get on the scoreboard early as Jake Rickenbach reached third base after a hit and run with John Snyder, ultimately allowing Ryan Ferguson to drive in Rickenbach with a Sacrifice to the pitcher. The Pioneers would not look back on the 1-0 lead and offer more scoring for the home fans.
The Pioneers would add two more runs in the bottom of the third inning off of Geneva starter Eric Schweiger as Mike Cleary singled to get things going. Cleary advanced to third after Justin Lamborn grounded back to the pitcher and then scored on a groundball that was hit to the second baseman off the of John Snyder.
Elmira would not be satisfied with the 3-0 lead as they plated a run in the fourth inning after a Mike Cleary RBI single and another in the seventh inning when John Snyder hit a Sacrifice fly out to right field allowing Mike Cleary to score from third.
A 5-0 lead was all that Chad Simendinger would need from his offense on the night as he pitched very effectively striking out five Geneva batters while surrendering four hits. Simendinger twice got help from his defense as Geneva grounded into two doubles plays on the night. With one out in the ninth inning Simendinger facing Paul Moreno got him to ground into the game ending double play.
Simendinger’s complete game is his first win of the season and also the second complete game at Dunn Field this year after Andrew Foushee shut down the Webster Yankees this past week in a 3-0 victory.
Jake Rickenbach and Mike Cleary finished the night with three hits apiece and six Pioneers in all finished the night with at least one hit. The win moves the Pioneers to 12-8 on the season and will have an off day on Monday as they head to Niagara on Tuesday for a 7:00 P.M. start against the Power. The Pioneers will return home to play Allegany County on July 7th at 7 P.M. with it being Bark in the Park night. Dogs with a license and rabies vaccine certification can play in the Dunn Field Dog Park!
